Brian Flores to the Dolphins, Bust or Boom? Time will tell
For the past few weeks everyone has been talking about who will be the Dolphins next head coach. We all assumed Brian Flores was the guy for the job, and he is set to make it official today Feb 4th. Flores will be heading to Miami feeling like the man. And he should. His defense that struggled for a majority of the season is coming off their best performance all season, and at a time when it mattered most. The SUPER BOWL. His defense managed to hold the second-best scoring offense to three points the ENTIRE game. That’s big!
But who is Flores? Well after graduating from Boston College, he came over to the Patriots as a scouting assistant. He worked his way up the ladder and became a part of the coaching staff in 2008. He was a linebacker coach for 11 seasons and was the defensive play caller for the 2018 season. It’s easy to say he did a great job transforming the Patriots defense this season, but let’s be honest, they always come together the second half of the season. I mean sure he called the plays, and input ideas, but that’s Belichick ‘s system. The real question is can he bring what he learned from the greatest coach of all time to the Dolphins…
While his Flores coaching skills will complement the stout Miami defense, what can he do about the offense? He’s going to a team that’s in need of a franchise quarterback, and some offensive line man who can protect him. Can Flores find a fit for this struggling offense? Can this team adapt to his coaching style? What tendencies and strengths can he bring from the Patriots to benefit the team? While all these questions will be answered with time, one thing is for certain, Flores is going to need more than 1 season to transform this team if he plans on earning some more rings his caliber.
