Dak Prescott Wants How Much?!  Should the Cowboys Pay Up or Not

For being a fourth-round pick, no one can deny that Dak Prescott has emerged as a successful NFL quarterback who has exceeded the expectations of many.   Playing for the Dallas Cowboys who are popular and get plenty of TV time, Prescott gets plenty of notoriety. But, like many before him, now he expects to get paid like one of the elite quarterbacks in the league.

Recently he turned down a contract offer of $30 million dollars a year, saying he wants $40 million a year, and this has put team owner Jerry Jones and the Cowboys in a bind.  Dak Prescott since coming into the league has produced 11,820 total yards and 85 total touchdowns on top of not missing a game. Those are some impressive numbers for sure, but we all know in this league it comes down to winning and that is something that he has arguably not done.  The team under Dak Prescott’s leadership has made it to the playoffs two out of the three years and but both times they came up short in the divisional game. Making it to the divisional game in the NFL is no easy task but it does show some teams true colors. In the NFL putting up numbers is one thing but willing your team to a win is what the elite quarterbacks have done.  These quarterbacks – Brady, Rodgers, Brees, etc. – are the ones who when all else fails they can put the team on their back and carry them to victory.

Since Dak Prescott got in the league he has been blessed with one of the best offensive lines in football and the NFL’s leading rusher for two of the last three years.  For these reasons I believe that while Dak Prescott has talent he also came into one of the best situations, one could ask for and for this reason he has succeeded. In terms of contracts, there are a lot of quarterbacks who have done the same or less than Dak Prescott who are getting paid a lot of money so it’s been proven that paying the man might be better than the alternative, which is going to the draft or trying your luck in free agency.  There are a lot of intangibles that Dak Prescott does possess, namely leadership and durability, but he needs to prove he can be the guy that gets the Cowboys through the tough times.

I believe he will get his money regardless just because that seems to be how the NFL is trending.  He deserves a contract for sure, but I don’t believe there is enough evidence on the table to ask for more money than guys that have won Super Bowl or have taken their teams to the Super Bowl.
