This past Friday, the Dallas Cowboys made the decision that every fan was waiting for. They fired Offensive Coordinator Scott Linehan. Linehan served as the OC for Dallas for 5 seasons. The Cowboy offense struggled this season, as it was 22nd in scoring and 23rd in passing. Many people barked at Linehan’s play calling over the past two seasons, and the combo of him and Dak Prescott just didn’t seem to gel. Towards the end of the season, a report came out that Prescott and Jason Garrett were calling the plays, not Linehan. Let’s look at the top candidate for the Offensive Coordinator job.

Kellen Moore

A career backup, Kellen Moore’s professional football career was short-lived, as he was a backup for the Lions and Cowboys over six seasons. He didn’t play in a regular season game until December 19, 2015, when Jason Garrett plugged him in against the New York Jets. His stats for his career are 779 passing yards with 4 TD and 6 INT. Moore’s career was cut short due to injury. In 2018, Kellen Moore was named as the quarterback’s coach for the Dallas Cowboys, a system he knew well under Linehan. Since the firing of Linehan, Moore has emerged as the frontrunner for the Offensive Coordinator position. The fact that he knows Jason Garrett’s scheme can help him implement an effective system. He could even take a piece out of Linehan’s system (well at least the rushing attack). I feel Kellen Moore would be a good candidate because he has played under Garrett before and has seen this offense run through a players’ lens. It will be interesting to see if Moore gets the call, or if Dallas goes in another direction. Is Moore the answer? The answer will be put on the field (if promoted) if he is or if he isn’t.

Cowboys Making a Big Splash at Head Coach?

While not in the running for the Offensive Coordinator position, there have been reports that Dallas may make a big splash at the head coaching position. Reports have been leaked that Jerry Jones may pursue New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton for the head coaching position. This move would make a big splash, as Payton is regarded as one of the top coaches in the league with a Super Bowl in his resume. For this to happen though, the Cowboys would have to fire Jason Garrett, who just led Dallas to its 3rd division title in 5 seasons and 3 straight winning seasons. Jones has also talked about extending Garrett this offseason. Are the Cowboys going to get Sean Payton? Probably not, but the idea that it could happen can bring a lot of hope for Dallas fans.
